THE SEVEN, INC. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Katsuaki Setoguchi; hereafter “THE SEVEN"), TBS Television, Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Masamine Ryuho; hereafter “TBS"), and U-NEXT Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Tenshin Tsutsumi; hereafter “U-NEXT") have announced a large-scale project: the “TBS × U-NEXT × THE SEVEN Global Project."
Broadcast and streaming dates finally revealed!! A special two-night drama, “Chapter: Youthful Days in Edo,” will air on terrestrial television on March 26 and 27, with streaming on U-NEXT available after each broadcast. The subsequent drama series, “Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto,” will then stream exclusively on U-NEXT, with new episodes released every Friday.
This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem" which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok"). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts.
It has been officially confirmed that the special drama "Chapter: Youthful Days in Edo" will air over two consecutive nights on Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27 on terrestrial TV. Following this, the drama series "Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto" will be available exclusively on U-NEXT, with new episodes streaming every Friday.
Since the project was first announced last October 4, social media has been flooded with fans eagerly awaiting the release dates and now, the full scope of the project has finally been revealed. From the moment the title was announced, the internet was full of excitement, with fans commenting, "This cast is a dream come true!" and "I can't wait to see how this new era of Shinsengumi will be portrayed." The anticipation has been building daily. Now, "Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem" is ready to make its grand debut, and there is no doubt it will take Japan by storm this spring, creating a true "Chiruran fever."
Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shieikan will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. Additionally, it has been announced that Kento Nakajima will play Izo Okada, known as "Hitokiri Izo” (Izo the Manslayer) —Hijikata's sworn enemy and ally—and Go Ayano will play Kamo Serizawa, the “strongest and most ruthless nemesis” who stands in the way of the protagonists. In addition, a diverse cast of actors has also been announced, including Eita Okuno, Mitsuomi Takahashi, Nobuaki Kaneko, Masanobu Ando, and Yuki Sakurai.
This "Japanese sword-action entertainment" will portray how Toshizo Hijikata, upon encountering the greatness of Isami Kondo, went on to build the legendary Shinsengumi together with comrades of powerful individuality such as Soji Okita and Hajime Saito. The story depicts not only how they lived, but also how their life came to an end—where friendships, betrayals, and convictions intertwine— as these men questioned the meaning of their own existence during a period of historical change, living briefly but brilliantly, driven by fierce determination so intense they were willing to stake their very lives, will be depicted with modern, alluring, and attractive character designs, also featuring high-speed sword fighting (“tate”) that has been praised as the fastest in history.
Star-studded cast assembles! Unveiling the latest teaser trailer with brand-new scenes for the very first time!!
With less than two months until the premiere, the latest teaser trailer—featuring never-before-seen footage—has been released.
The announcement also revealed the powerhouse actors joining the cast to portray the vibrant characters who deepen this story: Masaki Kaji as Kanbei Sagawa (Aizu Domain), Daichi Watanabe as Genzui Kusaka (Choshu Domain), Tomohiro Ichikawa as Hanpeita Takechi (Tosa Domain), Sho Aoyagi as Hanjiro Nakamura (Satsuma Domain), and the Mibu Roshigumi members: Takuro Osada as Kai Shimada, Taketo Tanaka as Aijiro Sasaki, Shogo Hama as Matasaburo Saeki, and Oshiro Maeda as the spy Susumu Yamazaki.
Set in the Bakumatsu era—a turbulent period mirroring the chaos of the modern world—this story follows the lives and deaths of young men through friendship, bonds, conviction, and betrayal. While the "full picture" of this heat-inducing drama is slowly coming to light—showcasing massive scale and "sweaty-palm" sword-fighting (tate) scenes that truly live up to the title of "Japanese Sword Action Entertainment"—many more surprises are still in store. Stay tuned for further updates.
