The drama will air on TBS over two consecutive nights on Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, and will be available for streaming exclusively on U-NEXT. This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem&quot; which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok&quot;). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shinsengumi will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. Additionally, it has been announced that Kento Nakajima will play Izo Okada, known as &quot;Hitokiri Izo” (Izo the Manslayer) —both Hijikata&apos;s sworn enemy and ally; Jun Matsumoto will portray Katamori Matsudaira, the &quot;Charisma of the Bakumatsu &quot; who stayed true to his convictions until the end of the era; and Go Ayano will play Kamo Serizawa, the “strongest and most ruthless nemesis” who stands in the way of the protagonists.

It has been officially announced that through the partnership between Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and U-NEXT, this &quot;Japanese sword-action entertainment&quot; will stream in more than 100 countries and regions worldwide starting Saturday, May 9, via HBO Max, including North America, Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia. The series will be released under the title Song of the Samurai on HBO Max, with subtitles and dubbed versions in local languages expected to be available in selected regions. From its inception, this project was designed for the global market, leveraging THE SEVEN’s world-class production capabilities and VFX technology, alongside the combined talent of Japan’s premier cast and crew. Since the fall of 2025, HBO Max has been expanding its lineup of Japanese dramas, and this work is set to be a major highlight of that expansion, reaching audiences across the globe. Furthermore, the subsequent drama series “Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto” will stream exclusively on U-NEXT, with new episodes released every Friday. In the final cast announcement before the premiere, it has been revealed that Jun Matsumoto will join the cast. This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem&quot; which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok&quot;). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shinsengumi will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. Additionally, it has been announced that Kento Nakajima will play Izo Okada, known as &quot;Hitokiri Izo” (Izo the Manslayer) —Hijikata&apos;s sworn enemy and ally—and Go Ayano will play Kamo Serizawa, the “strongest and most ruthless nemesis” who stands in the way of the protagonists. In this series, Matsumoto portrays Katamori Matsudaira, a visionary leader depicted as the “Final Shield” of the 200-year-old Shogunate. Though he sensed the inevitable collapse of the Edo era, he bravely accepted the role of Kyoto Shugoshoku (Military Governor of Kyoto), choosing to follow his own convictions rather than be swept away by the changing times. As the man who officially took in Isami Kondo, Toshizo Hijikata, and their band of mere ronin—entrusting them with the security of Kyoto—Katamori is both an absolute sovereign and a spiritual pillar to the soldiers. From the moment they meet Katamori, Hijikata and the men of the Shieikan are captivated by his unshakable resolve and immense magnanimity, evolving and altering their destinies through his influence. Even Kamo Serizawa, Hijikata’s greatest rival, holds him in high regard. However, I am personally very excited to see what kind of unique entertainment Chiruran will become. A word that frequently appears in the script is &quot;tagiru&quot;—that raw, seething energy—best describes how these people lived through the Bakumatsu era, burning through their lives with such fiery intensity, and I believe it will truly resonate with the audience. I look forward to delivering a powerful performance alongside Yamada-kun and the rest of the Shinsengumi cast.

We needed a cast member who could answer that question simply through their presence, spirit, and way of life—someone who could embody Katamori Matsudaira without compromise. The moment Jun Matsumoto stepped onto the set, the atmosphere shifted instantly. There, without a doubt, stood the &quot;Lord of Aizu.&quot; The overwhelming presence he projects, and the fighting spirit beneath it, became the backbone of this story. It has been officially confirmed that the special drama &quot;Chapter: Youthful Days in Edo&quot; will air over two consecutive nights on Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27 on terrestrial TV. In Chiruran, the characters portrayed by these two actors play an exceptionally important role in conveying both the way of life and the deaths of the Shinsengumi. When I first received the offer, I actually asked the producer, &quot;Are you sure I&apos;m the right casting choice?&quot;…But taking on the role of Izo Okada allowed me to spend time in a way that was incredibly intense, yet also somehow fleeting and ephemeral. Now, I truly feel grateful that, as Kento Nakajima, I had the chance to encounter and portray the role of Izo Okada. In particular, I had excellent chemistry with Yamada-kun, who plays Toshizo. Perhaps because our &apos;wavelengths&apos; aligned when we crossed swords, I felt like I could see Toshizo even when he wasn&apos;t there, allowing me to deliver a performance that was absolutely true to my heart. I believe I was able to portray the most lovable Izo in a way that only I could. If you don&apos;t watch &quot;Chiruran&quot;, I won&apos;t forgive you, ze yo!

Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shieikan will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. It has also been announced that Go Ayano will play Kamo Serizawa, the “strongest and most ruthless nemesis” who stands in the way of the protagonists. Within the Mibu Roshigumi, the “Serizawa Faction,” led by Kamo Serizawa, emerges as the greatest enemy of Hijikata and the Kondo faction. At the center of this faction is Nishiki Niimi, Serizawa’s confidant, who will stop at nothing—including cunning and ruthless tactics—to dominate the factional struggles. Eita Okuno, a masterful actor who fully embodies the dangerous aura and loneliness of a man who lives in the &quot;shadows&quot; of society, takes on this role. Standing alongside Serizawa as his longtime right-hand man, Goro Hirayama is a powerful and brutish figure, portrayed by Mitsuomi Takahashi, known for his high-energy performances who has supported countless hit dramas with his commanding presence.
