■ Adapting a Legendary Manga Once Deemed "Unfilmable" into an Epic Eight-Episode Live-Action Series

First published in 1993, the legendary manga "Kokumin Kuizu" (Written by Reiichi Sugimoto, Illustrated by Shinkichi Kato) struck a chord with its provocative premise and unique world-building, earning a reputation as "impossible to adapt." Now, starring Takayuki Yamada and directed by Noriyuki Yoshida, this groundbreaking story comes to life as an epic eight-episode live-action Netflix series. Set in an alternate Japan where Quiztopia—a national televised quiz show—has become the country’s supreme governing authority. Under the National Quiz Law, any contestant who survives the quiz can have virtually any wish granted by the government—from wealth and fame to the erasure of criminal records, the elimination of enemies, the establishment of an independent state, or even the private ownership of national landmarks. Meanwhile, eliminated contestants face brutal forced labor as punishment. Human desires are consumed as sheer entertainment, whipping society into a frenzy in a "cheerfully dystopian" world. THE SEVEN portrays this chaotic spectacle and the revolutionary uprising at its center on an unprecedented scale.

"A Japanese government that grants any citizen’s wish—if they can answer the quiz correctly. But what is the true motive behind it all? I was deeply captivated by the original manga for its incredibly bold portrayal of this country, which drove me to bring this live-action adaptation to life. With Takayuki Yamada stepping into the role of KK, the host of the in-show program Quiztopia, an utterly unique super-host has been born—part deity, part demon—who intensely hypnotizes and misleads everyone watching. While rooted in a completely wild premise, the series delivers a biting satire on reality, and I am thrilled to finally bring it to the screen. I truly hope audiences around the world enjoy it."

"A mad world where the government grants any desire to the winners of the quiz. Citizens rejoice, burn with excitement, go wild, and sometimes fall into despair—yet they still crave Quiztopia. What lies ahead for the people who continue to live normally in a world consumed by swelling desires? I hope you will stay tuned with us until the very end to find out."

This drama series is based on Yugo Aosaki’s acclaimed novel Glico with Landmines, which made history by sweeping an unprecedented total of nine major mystery awards in Japan. Co-starring Nana Mori and Aju Makita, the series is directed by Kazuaki Seki (Kakukakushikajika, Beethoven Forgery, and iconic music videos for Perfume and Sakanaction), a visual auteur renowned for blending pop, stylish visual aesthetics with intricately calculated storytelling. Today, the eagerly awaited teaser trailer has been unveiled. The teaser captures thrilling moments as universally known games evolve into unpredictable mind games. Showcasing Director Seki’s signature visual flair seamlessly fused with an intense battle of wits, the teaser builds tremendous anticipation for the fierce psychological warfare about to unfold.

■ Everyday Games Transformed by Special Rules! Mind Games, Tense Reversals, and Heart-Pounding Showdowns

The newly released teaser highlights Mato Imoriya (played by Nana Mori), a natural gambler, as she takes on her first match in "Landmine Glico," alongside her best friend Kazahi Koda (played by Aju Makita), who stands by her side. By adding a "landmine" rule to the classic game—where stepping on a mine sends a player back 10 steps—the difficulty and strategic depth escalate dramatically. Joining the game at the request of Kazahi, Mato soon finds herself facing a succession of eccentric games and formidable rivals. From "Bozu Seijaku" (combining traditional Hyakunin Isshu card-matching with Memory) and "Free-Verse Rock-Paper-Scissors" (adding original custom moves to standard gestures), to "Daruma Has Counted" (a psychological mind game based on "Red Light, Green Light") and "Four-Room Poker" (adding a special rule where players move between four rooms), familiar pastimes are transformed into the ultimate battles of strategy. Mato, a seemingly carefree yet brilliant blonde high school girl, and Kazahi, her caring best friend, see their ordinary school lives upended as they plunge into a "non-lethal death game" where what matters most to them is put on the line. Viewers will also be captivated by the striking contrast between their pop, comical, and affectionate friendship, and their intense, serious expressions when a game begins.

It is a poignant, grand reincarnation sci-fi romance depicting high school students entangled in the memories, love, and agonizing conflicts of their past lives. Utilizing cutting-edge, global-standard VFX technology, THE SEVEN renders supernatural powers and the visions of the moon base on screen with unprecedented realism and scale.

■ From peak glory to a "superstar actor nobody remembers"—A exhilarating comedy depicting one man's comeback from zero! Teaser Trailer Revealed

Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? is a buzzy human comedy that begins when Gen Takasegawa (Koji Yakusho)—a legendary actor once described as "known by every single person in Japan"—returns home for the first time in two years following the pandemic after finding success on the London stage, only to discover he has been completely forgotten by both the public and his own family. The newly unveiled teaser trailer opens at the height of his career: Takasegawa takes on the title role in King Lear at London's prestigious Shakespeare's Globe, earning a rapturous standing ovation. Moments later, back in his dressing room, he anxiously asks those around him, "Did someone happen to mention me?"—exposing his deep hunger for recognition. However, upon his triumphant return to Japan, Takasegawa is confronted with an unbelievable reality: not only ordinary people, but even his own family and colleagues no longer know who he is. Thus begins a new chapter in the life of Gen Takasegawa—a “superstar actor” who nobody remembers—clawing his way back from zero.

■ From King Lear to a sauna attendant! Koji Yakusho's "seven transformations" and a stellar ensemble cast

The biggest highlight of the series is the breathtaking range of performances delivered by Koji Yakusho, one of Japan’s most celebrated actors, through a whirlwind of wildly contrasting transformations. From a majestic King Lear to donning a cow hood at a themed café, playing a background extra, a period-drama firefighter and samurai sword-victim, a menacing figure in a fur coat, and even a sauna attendant in a pink polo shirt performing Aufguss fanning with a towel—reduced from glory to zero, Takasegawa, a walking bundle of raw need for recognition, struggles desperately and awkwardly through various places and guises in a journey you simply can’t take your eyes off. Furthermore, a colorful array of characters connected to Takasegawa appears throughout the trailer, played by Kento Kaku, Kenichi Matsuyama, Noriko Eguchi, Yuumi Kawai, Masatoshi Hamada, Hayato Isomura, Shusaku Kamikawa, Yoh Yoshida, and more. Built around the universal theme of our need for recognition, expectations are high for how these quirky, irresistibly compelling characters will constantly cross paths in Kankuro Kudo’s original story.

■ High-confidence vs. utter exhaustion—Teaser Key Art reveals a striking visual contrast

The teaser key art has also been revealed. The poster features Takasegawa pointing at himself with a confident, triumphant smile. Sitting on the bench directly in front of it is Takasegawa himself, drooping his head in utter exhaustion like a completely different person. This sharp contrast sparks the imagination for the turmoil to come. Will the fallen legendary actor ever step back into the spotlight? The original novel Rock, Paper, Landmine by Yugo Aosaki transforms universally known everyday games—such as "Daruma-san ga Koronda" (Red Light, Green Light) and "Concentration" (Memory)—into intense, high-stakes battles of strategy and deception by incorporating devilish special rules. Its innovative premise and gripping tension captivated readers, earning the unprecedented triple crown of the 37th Yamamoto Shugoro Prize, the 24th Honkaku Mystery Award, and the 77th Japan Mystery Writers Association Prize, in addition to sweeping all major mystery rankings, including the SR Mystery Best 10—a historic nine awards in total that set new records in Japan's mystery genre. THE SEVEN proudly brings this masterpiece to the screen at the highest visual scale.

■ Acclaimed young actresses Nana Mori & Aju Makita co-star to face off against eccentric rivals!

Leading this pulse-pounding battle of wits are two of Japan's brightest young actresses. Nana Mori plays Mato Imoriya, a seemingly carefree and easygoing high school girl who reveals sharp instincts and a gift for strategy the moment a game begins. Mori has captivated audiences in numerous hit works, including 5 Centimeters Per Second (2025), Hirayasumi (2025), Enjo (2026), and the film National Treasure (2025), for which she won the Outstanding Supporting Actress Award at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize. Aju Makita plays Kazahi Koda, Mato's best friend—a caring and protective presence who watches over Mato as she takes on dangerous challenges. Makita was first recognized by acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda in the drama Going My Home (2012) at age 10, and has since appeared in numerous Kore-eda works including Shoplifters (2018). Her recent credits include Reboot (2026), Kingdom: Battle of Souls (2026), and Look Back (2026). The gap between their charming appearances and the ruthless psychological warfare they engage in behind their smiles is a must-see. The lineup of eccentric rivals challenging the duo will be revealed at a later date.

Nana Mori (Lead Actress, playing Mato Imoriya):

"I couldn't wait to see how such an unpredictable story would be translated to the screen. Working with an extraordinary crew and a cast of peers I genuinely admire made every day on set a thrill. The spectacular CG work and the inventive ways the battles unfold are experiences only a visual medium can deliver—I really hope audiences have as much fun watching as we did making it."

Aju Makita (Lead Actress, playing Kazahi Koda):

"When I first read the script, I wondered how the concept of moving from a real-world setting into an imaginary world would translate on screen. Once filming of the imaginary world began, it was a completely new experience for me—we all figured it out together through trial and error, which made for an exciting creative process. Every character has long stretches of dialogue explaining the rules and strategies of the games, which was challenging, but I believe the result is a truly compelling series to watch."

Kazuaki Seki (Director):

"We've assembled a cast and crew every bit as bold as the title Rock, Paper, Landmine itself. How will those fiendishly intricate games come alive on screen, and where will our protagonists' journey take them? I can't wait for you to discover the answers—please look forward to this enigmatic drama."

Akira Morii (Executive Vice President, CCO & Producer, THE SEVEN):

"This isn't a typical survival game—it's an extreme battle of wits where the stakes are the things most precious to high school life, such as the success of the class, a place for friends, and a once-in-a-lifetime youth. My producer instincts kicked in because I wanted to capture the novel's intricate game design and addictive entertainment value in live action. For this project, having two actresses with such delicate and versatile expressive abilities as Nana Mori and Aju Makita is our greatest strength. Mato (played by Mori)—a genius who seems carefree at first glance—and Kazahi-chan (played by Makita), who protectively watches over her. The exquisite acting chemistry between them amidst these fierce games is undeniably a major highlight. Everyday games transform into breathtaking psychological warfare, and the exhilarating feeling of watching them pull off bizarre tactics and miraculous turnarounds from desperate situations will surely be addictive. Together with Director Kazuaki Seki, we have packed this series with unexpected visual expressions that even fans of the original novel will enjoy. Please look forward to this new kind of mind-game suspense!"

Yugo Aosaki (Author of the original novel Rock, Paper, Landmine):

"Rock, Paper, Landmine—it's a story about games that look simple but are surprisingly difficult. Adapting it to live action is also deceptively challenging—it requires a great deal of ingenuity in how things are presented visually. We're delivering this with a production team that I'm confident will clear those hurdles with ease. I can't wait for you to see what creative choices they've made, and what interpretation of Mato emerges in the drama. See you in November."

Buddy Marini (Head of Amazon MGM Studios, Japan):

＜Amazon MGM

"I was drawn to the potential of this story, where the essence of human nature is revealed through simple games. It's a new kind of entertainment—one that keeps you on the edge of your seat without a drop of blood being spilled. I'm proud to deliver this to a global audience in over 240 countries and territories with the incredible cast of Nana Mori and Aju Makita."

Please Save My Earth follows Arisu Sakaguchi, a high school student with a mysterious ability to communicate with plants, who begins experiencing vivid dreams of a past life on a lunar base — and discovers her classmates share the exact same memories. In these dreams, they are seven companions who once lived on a lunar base as scientists from another planet, observing Earth from afar. Meanwhile, Rin Kobayashi, a young boy living next door to Arisu, awakens after an accident to a past-life persona consumed by love for Mokuren, a woman on the lunar base. The intense passions and sins of their previous lives collide with relationships formed in the present, gradually revealing a shocking truth — and an unexpected connection between Arisu and Mokuren that binds their fates across lifetimes.

"When filming began and I stepped onto the set, I was absolutely blown away. I had the wonderful opportunity to fully immerse myself in playing Mokuren within these enormous sets. The unfamiliar dialogue, costumes, and makeup were purely thrilling. Since this is a story spanning past and present lives, many of the younger actors playing present-day characters came to the set to observe, making it a very fresh experience. This is a work with a devoted fanbase, so we all read the original manga thoroughly and gave it everything we had. Please look forward to this extraordinary world."

Takahiro Miki (Director):

"Whenever I was asked which manga I'd most like to adapt, my answer was always Please Save My Earth. I was deeply moved by how these young boys and girls, tormented by memories of their past lives, struggle through emotional turmoil yet face the beauty and pain of love, ultimately coming to accept their clumsy selves living in the present. I want to honor the passion and prayer that have kept this legendary masterpiece beloved for so many years, while bringing to it the visual beauty and emotional depth that only live-action can achieve."

Saki Hiwatari (Author of the Original Manga Please Save My Earth):

"I drew this story a very long time ago, so I'm genuinely surprised that it's being adapted into a drama in this day and age! I spent a lot of time wondering what kind of comment I should make, but I've been involved in a supervisory role up through the script stage. I haven't seen the completed adaptation yet, so I intend to watch it with the same heart-pounding excitement as all the readers. Think of it as a festival! Let's enjoy it together!"

Buddy Marini (Head of Amazon MGM Studios, Japan):

"A lunar base, memories of past lives, love that transcends time—bringing a story this epic to life in live action is an enormous challenge. But with the power of this source material, which has captivated readers for over 30 years, I'm confident we can move audiences around the world. Please look forward to the divine presence Alice Hirose brings to Mokuren and the beautiful visual world that Director Takahiro Miki weaves."

Delivering the Beauty of “Falling” — For Those Who Missed Cherry Blossom Season

“CHIRU-CANVAS”: A Work Completed by Falling Blossoms Ahead of the final episode of “Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto,” a special movie will be released on April 30 (Thu) via the official TBS YouTube channel and the drama’s official social media accounts. The video introduces both the production process and the completed visual of “CHIRU-CANVAS,” a newly developed expression method created specifically for this drama. “CHIRU-CANVAS” is a unique technique in which a specially processed adhesive board is placed beneath fully blooming cherry blossom trees. As petals fall and adhere naturally to the board, the visual gradually takes shape and is ultimately completed. This project expresses one of the core appeals of the series: the way of life of the Shinsengumi, who burned their lives for their beliefs and fell in vivid brilliance, as well as the fleeting beauty of their “way of falling.” Because the production relies entirely on nature—the condition of the blossoms and the weather—it came with many challenges. The team spent a total of 10 days attempting to capture the perfect timing of a cherry blossom storm. In the completed visual, the silhouette of Toshizo Hijikata (played by Yuki Yamada) emerges alongside his iconic line: “Bloom as much as you can—then fall.” At the end of the special movie, memorable lines from Hijikata and his greatest adversary, Kamo Serizawa (played by Go Ayano), overlap. Notably, Serizawa’s line is original to the drama and does not appear in the original manga—it was born on set as an improvised line by Ayano during filming. Watching the “CHIRU-CANVAS” special movie will undoubtedly make you want to experience the drama itself.

About “CHIRU-CANVAS” Production

“CHIRU-CANVAS” was filmed in a location where fully blooming cherry blossoms and falling petals coexisted. The team carefully adjusted conditions so that petals would fall naturally onto the panel, waiting for the precise moment when a cherry blossom storm would occur. Dependent on both weather and blossoms, the production took a total of 10 days.

Final Episode Synopsis (U-NEXT / May 1)

The final, decisive battle for the future of the Shinsengumi begins. Bearing the hopes of his comrades, Soji Okita confronts Kamo Serizawa. Though he unleashes the “demon” within and fights, his manslayer’s blade is dismissed by Serizawa as “meaningless violence.” At the brink of death, the gravely wounded Isami Kondo rushes in, risking his life to protect his disciple. Seeing his master’s resolve reminds Okita of the bond with Kondo, who once saved him when he was called a “demon child,” awakening him at last as a true swordsman. Okita, now awakened, and Serizawa—who acknowledges him as “the highest form of violence”—engage in a fierce duel, watched by Hijikata. Serizawa, a tyrant who sought only a place to fall and a warrior capable of killing him, meets his end with a satisfied smile, as if entrusting the future to Hijikata. Having lost his greatest rival, Hijikata is left with emptiness. Yet before him appears Shinsaku Takasugi, a revolutionary from Choshu and a symbol of a new era. Calling himself “GOD” and seeking to destroy the old order, Takasugi becomes Hijikata’s new nemesis—once again igniting his blood.

Special Comment: Yuki Yamada

At first, I simply thought, “They made a cherry blossom decoration.” But when I heard the behind-the-scenes story, I was surprised. They spent 10 days working while observing the weather and the condition of the blossoms. It’s only complete when the petals naturally fall and gather just right—honestly, they put so much emotion into it… (laughs).Of course, it makes me incredibly happy when everyone watching supports the work and feels moved by it. But even more than that, the fact that the production team poured so much passion into this project—that alone makes me feel like it’s “full bloom cherry blossoms, full bloom Yamachan!” That’s what makes me happiest. No matter how much we say “please watch it,” without knowing these kinds of stories, people might just pass by and think, “Oh, I see.” But once you understand this level of passion, even a single petal will surely look different. This year, I didn’t have time to properly enjoy cherry blossom viewing. During that time, I had the opportunity to write a comment for the new album by DISH//, whose vocalist is Takumi Kitamura, who plays Takasugi Shinsaku. While listening to Takumi’s voice, I walked under the cherry blossoms. Around me, people were enjoying hanami, and petals were falling—it inevitably made me think of CHIRURAN.For CHIRURAN, cherry blossoms are a very important presence. No matter how times change, there is always a history of people who truly lived. Petals scattered on the ground are something we might usually step on without thinking. But through this work, if people can take a moment to remember those who lived their lives to the fullest and fell, I would be very happy.By watching “CHIRU-CANVAS,” whether it makes you think “I’m looking forward to next spring,” or inspires you to find something meaningful in your own life—that would be wonderful. In the end, life is about blooming as much as you can and then falling. In life, the one who blooms wins.I hope this message reaches people all around the world. Please experience their story on U-NEXT and HBO Max.
