“CHIRU-CANVAS”: A Work Completed by Falling Blossoms Ahead of the final episode of “Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto,” a special movie will be released on April 30 (Thu) via the official TBS YouTube channel and the drama’s official social media accounts. The video introduces both the production process and the completed visual of “CHIRU-CANVAS,” a newly developed expression method created specifically for this drama. “CHIRU-CANVAS” is a unique technique in which a specially processed adhesive board is placed beneath fully blooming cherry blossom trees. As petals fall and adhere naturally to the board, the visual gradually takes shape and is ultimately completed. This project expresses one of the core appeals of the series: the way of life of the Shinsengumi, who burned their lives for their beliefs and fell in vivid brilliance, as well as the fleeting beauty of their “way of falling.” Because the production relies entirely on nature—the condition of the blossoms and the weather—it came with many challenges. The team spent a total of 10 days attempting to capture the perfect timing of a cherry blossom storm. In the completed visual, the silhouette of Toshizo Hijikata (played by Yuki Yamada) emerges alongside his iconic line: “Bloom as much as you can—then fall.” At the end of the special movie, memorable lines from Hijikata and his greatest adversary, Kamo Serizawa (played by Go Ayano), overlap. Notably, Serizawa’s line is original to the drama and does not appear in the original manga—it was born on set as an improvised line by Ayano during filming. Watching the “CHIRU-CANVAS” special movie will undoubtedly make you want to experience the drama itself.

“CHIRU-CANVAS” was filmed in a location where fully blooming cherry blossoms and falling petals coexisted. The team carefully adjusted conditions so that petals would fall naturally onto the panel, waiting for the precise moment when a cherry blossom storm would occur. Dependent on both weather and blossoms, the production took a total of 10 days.

CHIRU-CANVASは満開の桜と、舞い散る桜とが共存するロケーションで撮影されました。設置したパネルにうまく花びらが舞い散るよう調整し、狙い通りの桜吹雪が吹くタイミングを図り、天候次第、桜次第の中、合計10日間をかけて制作にトライしました。

At first, I simply thought, “They made a cherry blossom decoration.” But when I heard the behind-the-scenes story, I was surprised. They spent 10 days working while observing the weather and the condition of the blossoms. It’s only complete when the petals naturally fall and gather just right—honestly, they put so much emotion into it… (laughs).Of course, it makes me incredibly happy when everyone watching supports the work and feels moved by it. But even more than that, the fact that the production team poured so much passion into this project—that alone makes me feel like it’s “full bloom cherry blossoms, full bloom Yamachan!” That’s what makes me happiest.No matter how much we say “please watch it,” without knowing these kinds of stories, people might just pass by and think, “Oh, I see.” But once you understand this level of passion, even a single petal will surely look different.This year, I didn’t have time to properly enjoy cherry blossom viewing. During that time, I had the opportunity to write a comment for the new album by DISH//, whose vocalist is Takumi Kitamura, who plays Takasugi Shinsaku. While listening to Takumi’s voice, I walked under the cherry blossoms. This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem&quot; which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok&quot;). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shinsengumi will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. Furthermore, the subsequent drama series “Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto” will stream exclusively on U-NEXT, with new episodes released every Friday. This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem&quot; which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok&quot;). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shinsengumi will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. In this series, Matsumoto portrays Katamori Matsudaira, a visionary leader depicted as the “Final Shield” of the 200-year-old Shogunate. Though he sensed the inevitable collapse of the Edo era, he bravely accepted the role of Kyoto Shugoshoku (Military Governor of Kyoto), choosing to follow his own convictions rather than be swept away by the changing times. As the man who officially took in Isami Kondo, Toshizo Hijikata, and their band of mere ronin—entrusting them with the security of Kyoto—Katamori is both an absolute sovereign and a spiritual pillar to the soldiers. From the moment they meet Katamori, Hijikata and the men of the Shieikan are captivated by his unshakable resolve and immense magnanimity, evolving and altering their destinies through his influence. Even Kamo Serizawa, Hijikata’s greatest rival, holds him in high regard. However, I am personally very excited to see what kind of unique entertainment Chiruran will become. A word that frequently appears in the script is &quot;tagiru&quot;—that raw, seething energy—best describes how these people lived through the Bakumatsu era, burning through their lives with such fiery intensity, and I believe it will truly resonate with the audience. We needed a cast member who could answer that question simply through their presence, spirit, and way of life—someone who could embody Katamori Matsudaira without compromise. The moment Jun Matsumoto stepped onto the set, the atmosphere shifted instantly. There, without a doubt, stood the &quot;Lord of Aizu.&quot; The overwhelming presence he projects, and the fighting spirit beneath it, became the backbone of this story. When Yuki Yamada’s Toshizo Hijikata confronted Matsumoto’s Lord Katamori, the heartfelt respect and trembling resonance between them was profound. This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem&quot; which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok&quot;). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. It has been officially confirmed that the special drama &quot;Chapter: Youthful Days in Edo&quot; will air over two consecutive nights on Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27 on terrestrial TV. Following this, the drama series &quot;Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto&quot; will be available exclusively on U-NEXT, with new episodes streaming every Friday. Since the project was first announced last October 4, social media has been flooded with fans eagerly awaiting the release dates and now, the full scope of the project has finally been revealed. From the moment the title was announced, the internet was full of excitement, with fans commenting, &quot;This cast is a dream come true!&quot; and &quot;I can&apos;t wait to see how this new era of Shinsengumi will be portrayed.&quot; The anticipation has been building daily. The two titles were featured at “Next on Netflix 2026,” a lineup presentation highlighting selected upcoming Netflix releases scheduled for 2026, where newly revealed footage and visuals offered an early glimpse into each series’ world and story. In “Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?”, the story follows Gen Takasegawa (Koji Yakusho), a once world-renowned stage actor attempting a comeback. Blending themes of ego, humor, and quiet vulnerability, the series unfolds as a warm, human-centered comedy. “Quiztopia” stars Keiichi Keii (Takayuki Yamada) as the host of an ultimate quiz show where contestants risk everything to have their wishes granted. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Tenshin Tsutsumi; hereafter “U-NEXT&quot;) have announced a large-scale project: the “TBS × U-NEXT × THE SEVEN Global Project.&quot; This project will be the first live-action adaptation based on the popular manga, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem&quot; which features powerful artwork and overwhelming drawing skill by Eiji Hashimoto, and is based on a story by Shinya Umemura (also known for “Record of Ragnarok&quot;). Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu), the story depicts the intense and passionate lives of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, through spectacular action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. The special drama will be broadcast on TBS and the drama series will be exclusively streamed on U-NEXT in the spring of 2026. Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, and the other members of the Shieikan will be played by a group of talented young actors, each combining strong individuality and skill: Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki, and Hihio Iwanaga. Additionally, it has been announced that Kento Nakajima will play Izo Okada, known as &quot;Hitokiri Izo” (Izo the Manslayer) —Hijikata&apos;s sworn enemy and ally—and Go Ayano will play Kamo Serizawa, the “strongest and most ruthless nemesis” who stands in the way of the protagonists. In addition, a diverse cast of actors has also been announced, including Eita Okuno, Mitsuomi Takahashi, Nobuaki Kaneko, Masanobu Ando, and Yuki Sakurai. This &quot;Japanese sword-action entertainment&quot; will portray how Toshizo Hijikata, upon encountering the greatness of Isami Kondo, went on to build the legendary Shinsengumi together with comrades of powerful individuality such as Soji Okita and Hajime Saito.
