The special drama will be broadcast on TBS and the drama series will be exclusively streamed on U-NEXT in the spring of 2026. When I first received the offer, I actually asked the producer, &quot;Are you sure I&apos;m the right casting choice?&quot;…But taking on the role of Izo Okada allowed me to spend time in a way that was incredibly intense, yet also somehow fleeting and ephemeral. Now, I truly feel grateful that, as Kento Nakajima, I had the chance to encounter and portray the role of Izo Okada. In particular, I had excellent chemistry with Yamada-kun, who plays Toshizo. Perhaps because our &apos;wavelengths&apos; aligned when we crossed swords, I felt like I could see Toshizo even when he wasn&apos;t there, allowing me to deliver a performance that was absolutely true to my heart. I believe I was able to portray the most lovable Izo in a way that only I could. If you don&apos;t watch &quot;Chiruran&quot;, I won&apos;t forgive you, ze yo!

Within the Mibu Roshigumi, the “Serizawa Faction,” led by Kamo Serizawa, emerges as the greatest enemy of Hijikata and the Kondo faction. At the center of this faction is Nishiki Niimi, Serizawa’s confidant, who will stop at nothing—including cunning and ruthless tactics—to dominate the factional struggles. Eita Okuno, a masterful actor who fully embodies the dangerous aura and loneliness of a man who lives in the &quot;shadows&quot; of society, takes on this role. Standing alongside Serizawa as his longtime right-hand man, Goro Hirayama is a powerful and brutish figure, portrayed by Mitsuomi Takahashi, known for his high-energy performances who has supported countless hit dramas with his commanding presence. It was recently announced that Yuki Yamada will play the protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata. This &quot;Japanese sword-action entertainment&quot; will portray how Toshizo Hijikata, upon encountering the greatness of Isami Kondo, went on to build the legendary Shinsengumi together with comrades of powerful individuality such as Soji Okita and Hajime Saito. Suzuki possesses a captivating charm, stemming from the appealing contrast between his sincere, strong spirit and his innocent, bright smile.

At the helm of the production is Akira Morii of THE SEVEN as Chief Producer — whose credits include globally successful projects such as Netflix’s Alice in Borderland and the worldwide hit adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho; THE SEVEN’s film BAKA’s Identity also received acclaim at the Busan International Film Festival, taking home the Best Actor Award. THE SEVEN has announced its new large-scale project in collaboration with TBS Television and U-NEXT, marking the first partnership between the three companies. Today, we are pleased to reveal the project’s key details and announce the lead cast.

Announced as a TBS × U-NEXT × THE SEVEN global project, production began in April and has been shooting on location across Japan, including Kyoto, Shiga, Shizuoka and Chiba. By combining sweeping locations, rich cinematic production values and advanced VFX, the project delivers truly spectacular imagery. At the helm of the production is Akira Morii of THE SEVEN as Chief Producer — whose credits include globally successful projects such as Netflix’s Alice in Borderland and the worldwide hit adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho; THE SEVEN’s film BAKA’s Identity also received acclaim at the Busan International Film Festival, taking home the Best Actor Award. Producers Mamoru Inoue and Kazuya Shimomura (THE SEVEN) also join the producing team.Directing is Kazutaka Watanabe, known for his work on NHK’s taiga drama Onna Jōshu Naotora, the morning drama series Mare, and the Kishibe Rohan Does Not Move series; Watanabe is widely respected for his meticulous pursuit of realism and tension and enjoys great trust from performers. 原作の土方歳三の熱量や仲間との絆、 それが誰かを動かしていく様がすごくしっかりと描かれているので、そこは本当に大事にしたくて「やるなら最後までやり遂げたい」と強く思いました。 でも、最近、走り続ける中で自分の炎がどこにあるのか分からなくなるような、そんな孤独を感じてたんです。 それでも「信じられないようなことを続けていれば、いつか信じられないことが起きる」ということだけは信じてて。 それって新撰組もそうだったんじゃないかって思ったんです。 仲間や自分たちが死ぬかもって時に、時代を、世界を変えたい、 その一心だったんじゃないか…生きてるから何か出来る、 俺は生きてる、だから何かせねばって。 そんな思いを森井Pに話した時「その鬱憤をここで晴らしてくれ」と。 それからはもう、歳三じゃないですけど 「燃やすしかねえだろ、滾らすしかねえだろ」となれました。 素晴らしい仲間たちのおかげで、自分たちだからできた“令和の新撰組”が創り上げられたと思います。

It’s the story of men who burned their lives to shine in their own fleeting moments, giving everything they had to find their place to bloom. Over the course of six months of filming, Yuki Yamada and the young warriors of this project faced that burning spirit head-on. Capturing every single spark of that passion was our mission.
